About Jost Van Dyke
Approximately 300 BVI residents call the three-square-mile island of Jost Van Dyke home. Despite its small population and size, it houses one of the busiest ports in the BVI, Great Harbour, mostly due to day-trippers from the US Virgin Islands of St John and St Thomas who must clear immigration before stepping foot on land. Residents of Tortola and Virgin Gorda also love a Sunday session at one of the many beach bars on Jost such as Soggy Dollar Bar, Hendo’s Hideaway, One Love Bar, Ivan’s Stress-Free Bar, Gertrude’s, and Foxy’s. Foxy’s in Great Harbour is home to one of the most popular New Year’s Eve parties in the world, Foxy’s Old Year’s Night, where revelers party until the sun comes up.
Country singer Kenny Chesney is a regular visitor to Jost Van Dyke and has included it in several songs and videos.
“Oh I wish I was there tonight on Jost Van Dyke
Sipping on some Foxy’s Firewater rum
Or kickin’ back with Ivan
With all my friends down in the islands
Wouldn’t take much for me to up and run
To another life somewhere in the sun”
–Kenny Chesney, “Somewhere in the Sun”
But Jost Van Dyke is not just for day drinking and parties. Bubbly Pool is a popular tourist destination where, if the tide is right, a serene cove seems to bubble up from the incoming waves through the rocks. For snorkelers and divers, coral reefs are easily accessed from most of the beaches, and since the island has not been developed like the others, the coral is thriving and resplendent. The island is also a gorgeous hiking destination, offering miles of trails through lush vegetation and over scenic hills. Nearby islands and cays include Little Jost Van Dyke, Sandy Cay, Green Cay, and the tiny Sandy Spit—perfect spots to anchor and explore.

The advantage of renting in the BVI before committing to buy is that you have an opportunity to immerse yourself in the different parts of the island and truly get a flavor for the different areas.
